- You Don’t Own Me is derived from the classic 1963 song by Lesley Gore. At the time of its release, these words were seen as an anthem symbolising women’s empowerment, challenging control, asserting freedom and insisting that mind, body and creativity remain our own. Decades later, this still rings true today, revealing an underlying importance and relevance to our current climate. The process itself reiterates a resistance in the pursuit of subverting traditional structures, each stitch further affirming an evolution of tradition, form and material, allowing for transformation and a redefinition of ourselves, and the medium used.
