- I wanted to celebrate in paint the pleasure reading brings. Anna Funder's book portrays the relationship between the great writer George Orwell and his first wife. Among other things that book shows how great work can be the result not of a single genius but sometimes results from a collaboration, in this case as with this work here a sort of accidental, unacknowledged one. What drove the making of this painting was my desire to acknowledge the importance of reading - the equal but different power of words to images.
