- Whakaata Waikāretu (Reflection of Waikāretu) reimagines photography as a relational practice grounded in my Māori ancestry. This artwork forms part of my ongoing series Te raranga i te awa (Weaving the River), developed through photographing waterways important to my tribe. Photographs are printed, cut and hand woven into kete (Māori baskets), transforming the image from a flat surface into a (ancestral treasure) that is valued and holds knowledge. Through weaving, photography shifts from medium of record into an ancestral belonging held in relationship, inviting viewers to consider how images sustain relationships and reconnect photography to place, history and collective responsibility.
