- 'Walking into West Flank, Gariwed' investigates the relationship between the environment and human intervention. This painting imagines what native landscape might look like after bushfires. The work also acts as an object of personal contemplation, with the process of painting serving as a meditative diary entry. Fields of colour and gestural mark-making have been applied to the canvas while contemplating urban ecosystems. Just as landscapes accumulate temporal layers of human intervention, these layers become repositories of embedded personal memories and histories through their material process. Through this process driven approach to painting, 'Walking into West Flank, Gariwed' reflects the materiality of place and the dialogue between natural disasters and natural systems, questioning how we might reframe our relationship with landscapes.
