- A walk on the beach or in the bush always brings inspiration to my studio making. I am particularly drawn to weathered surfaces and broken objects. Narratives of experiences and evidence of place are written into these objects. Landscapes carry stories of time and connection as well. In my wanderings I look for treasures and beauty in these wild places. The whiteness and translucency of unglazed porcelain captures some of the material qualities of nature finds. Porcelain sculptural works feel fossil like in the way that they capture the life essence of once living things in this environment. I use light in my work to portray a sense of ephemerality. The way light interacts with the materiality of porcelain enhances ideas of fragility, strength and the influences of deep time. I collect organic material like these fern leaves. These leaves have been dipped into liquid porcelain and then fired to a very high temperature where they completely burn away in the kiln and leave traces of life in the fired clay. These works create an ephemeral quality and embrace imperfection as part of life’s beauty. This work captures the unfurling new fern leaves in the fern gully near my place. I feel like its a metaphor for the students at Ravenswood, unfurling in their brilliance, and about to embark into the world with anticipation and hope.
