- “Sleeping Muse #3” draws inspiration from Sanné Mestrom’s Self Portrait, reimagining Brancusi’s Sleeping Muse through a feminist lens. By merging traditional sculpting techniques with domestic needlework, I blur the boundaries between art and “craft” and challenge material hierarchies by replacing bronze with recycled silk. The beaded numbers across the surface mark the 35 years of China’s one-child policy, a system that shaped at least three generations. By positioning my own complex journey of motherhood as the true “muse” in this work, I confront the layered realities of raising multiple children as a first-generation migrant in Australia.
