- This portrait of Sarah Greenwood, an actress, explores the subtle expression of an inner life, a concept that runs throughout my work. Drawing inspiration from early Renaissance frescoes, I utilise simple composition and form. Distortions such as cropped arms, exaggerated eyes, and an offset mouth help create an emotional weight, along with a powerful sense of presence. These choices move beyond realistic representation and while the narrative stems from Greenwood's personal account of being caught in a rip, the overarching concept remains – how to express the subtleties of an inner life within the canon of figurative painting today.
