- Artist Statement
- Monika Cvitanovic is a Sydney based artist who fosters a slow and circular practice as a form of resistance to patriarchal and capitalist expectations. Monika is deeply interested in materiality, memory and layers of histories embedded in quotidian objects. This work reclaims textiles as a site of care for the histories of women’s textile-based knowledge and involves folding of a well-worn shirt, natural dyeing using tea and stitching. The accumulation of repetitive cross-stitches registers the layers of labour embedded in the folded shirts and encodes the memories associated with the artist’s body and the circumstances in which she wore it.
