- 'Parting' (2024) is a painting from the series Esmerelda and Ermyntrude. The series takes its title and focus from the “naughty” novella written by Bloomsbury Group author Lytton Strachey and illustrated by Erté (Romain de Tirtoff). Each work in the series relies on decoration and garment to interpret scenes from the book and its key protagonists. In 'Parting', one ornate and exaggerated feminine figure bids farewell to another (who is her inverse). The title suggests a scene of fond goodbyes but also invokes something of sexualised gendered bodies (that “part”). Using innuendo and a playful tone, the work celebrates the camp and queer narrative of Stracchey and Erté’s text. It aligns these figures with a performance of femininity where revelry, enjoyment and pleasure are defining characteristics.
