- Artist Statement
- The microscopic domain of cellular structures fascinates me, and my wearable sculptures are created by manipulating numerical sequences found in nature to devise novel patterns. Hormosira, commonly known as Neptune’s Necklace, is a species of seaweed. My interpretation has been painstakingly hand-crocheted with precious French and Japanese embroidery threads of silk and gold. ‘Golden Hormosira’ was created using variations of the seaweed’s chromosome numbers. Multiple stitches within stitches cause the strand to curl upon itself — just as the double helix of DNA compresses its structure to accommodate an incredible amount of information.
