- Artist Statement
- Conflagration continues an exploration of the connection between tactility and textiles in contemporary art that began during my doctoral research. I have used horsehair, a unique and little-used fibre to create animalistic, highly textured topographies whose tactile potential is expanded by contrasting the hair weft with a wire warp. The inspiration for the work was the fire that raged through Conjola National Park, almost to our doorstep, in the summer of 2019/2020. Conflagration was created to entice touch, allowing people to experience the delight that is possible when one engages with art, and indeed life, through the sense of touch.
