- Colonial Waistcoat is a re-imagined object from the Mitchell Library: a waistcoat which belonged to Captain Cook and was embroidered by his wife. It is replicated in local plants: stitched paperbark with buttonholes decorated with wildflowers from the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Shrub, the plant community that dominated pre-colonial Sydney. It is ‘an Australian object’ addressing the question of how to reconcile our two histories. By reimagining the pattern of this colonial object in native plants, the work is a both personal act of reparation, and an invitation to collectively imagine a colonisation that respectfully embraced indigenous culture and ecology.
