- Gurdive Webster, an emerging abstract painter, is part of the post-partition Indian Sikh diaspora born in post war Briton in the early 1950’s and who emigrated to Australia in 1981. Gurdive’s acrylic abstracts paintings are non -representational, gestural, references are often the built environment, nature, her own and others wild meadow like gardens full of colour, traditional Indian clothing and jewellery. Also nodded to in the works are Gurdive’s lived experiences as part of a collective of non-english speaking migrant women and young girls making culturally specific household handiwork items such as gendered wedding gifts as part of the dowries for arranged marriages . Gurdive’s paintings hum with jewel-like colour combinations, catching the corner of your eye, the questioning of colour combinations and boundaries ..asking what is possible? Gurdive’s works could be seen as embodying the collision and frisson, the need to step away from cultural norms and expectations … the energy force of when East meets West.
