Artist Statement
Breaking Ground (after Erica McGilchrist) From Dream Home Builds with home cinemas, butler’s pantries and ensuites off every bedroom, to an affordability crisis and rising homelessness, housing is a market of extremes. 'Breaking Ground’ is an allegory on the politics of urban planning, land use and environmental devastation. Man-made materials now outweigh Earth’s living biomass. Urban sprawl decimates food bowls, forests and the natural habitats of animals. Breaking Ground is a renovation of a work by feminist Erica McGilchrist (1926-2014), paying homage to the co-founder of the Women’s Art Register, the world’s oldest artist-led living archive of Australian women and gender diverse artists.
