- Artist Statement
- Mortensen’s practice is informed by an interest in the subconscious and in allowing decisions to emerge without being over-determined. The work stays attentive to what feels right as it develops, recognising a subconscious logic through repetition and process. Interest lies in what happens when colour, shape, symbols, and space begin relating to one another. Mortensen works on unprimed canvas, treating it like paper rather than a fixed ground. Colour soaks into the surface through stain priming, ink, gravity, and soft pastels before building with spray paint, collage, and oil paint. Instability reflects how memory and thought behave.
