- Drawn from photographs captured on nocturnal walks around the clifftop neighbourhoods of Vaucluse, Apparition gestures towards the idea of a communion, which exists here in a rush of partially uncovered terrains, architectures and presences. Beginning with its very title, Apparition is testament to the artistic task of summoning spatial and metaphysical unity from remembered fragments and sensations; and with its haunted air, is a record of the artist's communion with the spirit of place. Clayton-Smith here offers a succinct summary of the perennial themes of her work: the deep, metaphysical connection between experience and the act of painting.
